This would be, of course, a bonus mode I think, as the TD part of the game should most certainly take priority. If you're going to do a 2-player co-op mode, you could literally have macro/micro a la Starcraft, in which each person takes a turn between building the joint maze and doing some kind of mini-game that generates income (something simple, a bit random, and fun on its own like a Bejeweled-style puzzle). All of the factions felt different from the others, had their purpose or did well enough to not outshine the others, and had enough variety that I didn't feel that it was lacking. Throw in a few heroes that you control and can level up, and bam, good to go. I could switch over to the Hero faction, where there are few towers to build, but they're quite strong, but expensive. I could play as the Death faction, which had one of the highest, if not the highest DPS, but little utility and do well. My favorite TD from WC3 always was Burbenog, it was rigid (or standard, whatever you want to call it), but it had many different starting factions to pick from, heroes, good difficulty scaling, well placed and consistent bonus rounds, and it felt overall balanced. They were either rigid or freeform, in that you could make mazes for the enemies to run through, or simply building on the sides.
